Locos and Multiple-units - Netherlands: Books - Overviews

Discover here the best books on the rolling stock of the NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen), HSM, SS, NCS, NBDS and other Dutch railway companies.

Benelux Railways

The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg each have their own railway systems, which are closely connected across the region. All three countries provide regular passenger services, usually every hour or more often, both domestically and across borders.

In the Netherlands, Nederlandse Spoorwegen operates most services, supported by companies such as Arriva and Syntus on several local routes.

In Belgium, all passenger services are run by NMBS/SNCB, serving both the Flemish and Walloon regions. Luxembourg's CFL operates an extensive network with frequent national services and numerous international connections, including links with Germany and France.

John Law has visited the railways of this region since the early 1970s and has travelled on almost all lines open to passenger traffic. Over the decades, he has photographed the many changes and has built an extensive collection. This book presents a selection of his most notable images.

Retourtje verleden - Materieelgids jaren '80

Which railway enthusiast does not long for the eighties, the decade in which the Dutch NS rolling stock took on many forms, both in terms of types and colour schemes?
The rolling stock was subject to a major modernisation campaign at this time. Outdated rolling stock such as the 1000 series locomotives and the '46 rolling stock made way for newcomers such as the 1600 series locomotives, the double-decker carriages and the Wadlopers made their appearance.
With this modernisation, the old colours from the fifties almost completely disappeared. New colour schemes appeared on a number of ICM rolling stock and the new Benelux rolling stock.

In the "Materieelgids jaren '80", Frank Oude Elferink describes the NS rolling stock from the eighties: from the steel baggage cars from 1932 to the diesel locomotives series 6400 from 1989. The rolling stock that NS rented from other companies for a longer period of time is also examined in more detail.
Thanks to the cooperation of a number of photographers, a representative image is shown of the NS rolling stock between 1980 and 1990. Time for a return ticket to the eighties.
