The four rings - today the world-famous trademark of the premium manufacturer Audi. But what do these rings actually mean? They are intertwined, thus representing a connection: that of the companies Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. In order to be strong and successful in the times of crisis after the "Great Depression", they merged in 1932 to form Auto Union. This marked the beginning of a unique and exciting automotive company history, and Audi, as the only remaining brand in the group, is more attractive today than ever.
This book uses many contemporary images to explain how the individual Auto Union companies came together. Outstanding cars and motorcycles from the brands are shown and it is explained why Audi still exists today and why the four rings did not become five after the merger with NSU in 1969. Having arrived in the modern era, the company's multitude of innovations and new models are presented.
Much more than "Vorsprung durch Technik": - History of Auto Union and NSU - the new brands Ducati and Lamborghini - technical innovations such as quattro, Audi Space Frame or the five-cylinder engine - design studies and groundbreaking styling - Audi in racing - all series from A1 to R8 presented.

There are also Audis previously owned by prominent people, custom-made models, racing cars - simply everything that is relevant to the company's history.
In order to document the extremely extensive and extensive archives of Audi AG, in-house photographer Stefan Warter spent several days in the "holy halls". In the process, he tracked down some lost treasures from the brand's history. Special Audi models are examined in more detail in exciting essays. A visually stunning journey through Audi history!

The founding of Auto Union AG in 1932 was the first state-owned German automobile company, which united the car manufacturers Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer, which had been hit hard by the global economic crisis, rehabilitated them and led them to new heights. The brand's headquarters were in Chemnitz, although the company's administration was housed in the DKW headquarters in Zschopau in the early years.
Even today there are numerous architectural testimonies of the Auto Union in Saxony that have survived the bombing war, dismantling and planned economy - some renovated at great expense, but some left to decay and with an uncertain future.
The historian Martin Kukowski and the photographer Stefan Warter go on a search for clues and document the current state with impressive photos, accompanied by expert historical classification and photo documents from the archives.

Audi AG looks back on a varied and eventful history, with a tradition stretching back to the 19th century. In the course of the first wave of concentration in automobile manufacturing, Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer to form Auto Union AG in 1932. The four intertwined rings of the Audi logo are still reminiscent of the founding brands today.
Today, Audi is one of the major German premium brands alongside Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Werner Oswald traces the history of this rise and the models with which Auto Union and its heirs achieved this feat in this volume.
After the Second World War, there were still numerous vehicles from Auto Union AG on German roads, but the company was dissolved in 1948. The demand for spare parts and new cars was high, so in 1949 a new company was founded with headquarters in Ingolstadt: Auto Union GmbH. After several takeovers, today's Audi AG emerged.
Anyone who walks through the city with their eyes open can still find numerous architectural witnesses to the early years, even today, 70 years after the company was founded. In impressive photos, accompanied by expert historical classification and photo documents from the archives, this volume shows the current state of the buildings and invites you on an exciting journey of discovery.
