Dolina Schanfigg, otoczona wysokimi górami, była wykorzystywana rolniczo przez prawie 2000 lat. Malownicze wsie w górnej części doliny należą do najstarszych osad Walser w kantonie Gryzonia.
Po długich dyskusjach na temat przebiegu linii kolejowej, 15 lipca 1911 roku założono Towarzystwo Kolei Chur-Arosa. Budowa około 26-kilometrowej linii rozpoczęła się 1 sierpnia 1912 roku, a już po dwóch latach, 12 grudnia 1914 roku, kolej została otwarta.
