Dit boek is het eerste toegankelijke Engelstalige werk over motorfietsen in de Sovjet-Unie. Het richt zich op de periode van de Tweede Wereldoorlog tot 1990 en onderzoekt de productie, het gebruik en de export van Sovjet-motorfietsen. De Sovjet-industrie volgde geen marktvraag, maar baseerde ontwerpen op vooroorlogse Duitse BMW- en DKW-modellen. Honderdduizenden robuuste, functionele motoren werden geproduceerd, heel anders dan de modieuze modellen in het Westen. Fabrieken in Isjevsk, Kovrov, Moskou en Minsk bouwden diverse types, terwijl de bekende Ural- en Dnepr-modellen uit Irbit en Kiev kwamen.

It was not only MZ and Simson that drove in the former GDR: in the course of so-called compensation deals, vehicles were repeatedly imported from Eastern Bloc countries.
