The first trucks rolled off the production line at the Ford plant in Cologne as early as 1928. However, the diesel short-bonnet trucks built from 1951 onwards were unable to match the pre-war success and so the production of large trucks ended in 1961.
By this time, however, the Ford FK van had already eclipsed the legendary VW Bulli in terms of payload and speed. The Ford Transit, built from 1965 onwards based on British designs, became a legend, and it was only with the arrival of the new generation in 1986 that commercial vehicle production left Cologne.
