Berliet 1961-1963

For Berliet, the early sixties were rich in symbolism. Indeed, this period saw the beginning of the Common Market and the lifting of customs barriers intended to free up access to the German, Italian, Belgian and Dutch markets.
The locomotive brand equipped itself with structures that would allow it to position itself favorably in the face of these new outlets and developed specific vehicles adapted to the codes of the new markets.

At the same time, Berliet maintained its export efforts, particularly in black Africa, the Maghreb, Cuba and the People's Republic of China. Finally, the Vénissieux manufacturer pursued a policy of intense renewal of its French range in order to be able to maintain its positions in the face of its traditional competitors such as Saviem and Unic but also in the face of new competitors with long teeth from Germany, Italy and Great Britain.

Les camions Berliet en publicités 1956-1958

Berliet is certainly the most emblematic and representative brand in the world of French trucks, due to its seniority - its first truck was built in 1907 -, the extent of its ranges and the variety of types of vehicles manufactured.
Berliet has always been very prolific in advertising documents, at least one document being published for each current model. These advertisements, which include the basic technical characteristics, are of great interest to enthusiasts and collectors alike. Over a given period, they allow the entire range to be reconstructed and the models to be properly situated.

This book brings together a selection of printed documents from 1956 to 1958, some of which are difficult to find today. They concern the "R" models, that is to say the last chassis to be equipped with Ricardo injection engines, before the arrival of the Magic direct injection engines.
Accompanied by a few photos, they will immerse the reader in the wonderful world of the fifties in Vénissieux.

Berliet - une histoire industrielle lyonnaise

Automobiles Berliet was one of the most prestigious companies in Lyon. The locomotive company is known for having invented the CBA truck of the Voie sacrée de Verdun, the GLR and its five-cylinder Diesel engine, the Stradair, or the T100 and the Gazelle, true ships of the desert.

The epic began in 1895 when Marius Berliet manufactured his first car. After the automobile, he bet on the truck. Bold new choices, Diesel, gasobois, allowed the company to overcome the interwar crisis. After the dark years of the Second World War, Berliet, which had abandoned the manufacture of cars and vans, became the leading French manufacturer of heavy goods vehicles.

True to its reputation, the company continued to innovate and invest. But in 1974, as part of the restructuring of the French automobile industry, Berliet became a subsidiary of Régie Renault and joined the Renault Véhicules Industriels group with Saviem. The author invites you to discover this company, which will forever be associated with the history of the Lyon car.
