The Schanfigg Valley, surrounded by high mountains, has been shaped by agriculture for nearly 2.000 years. The picturesque villages in the upper valley are among the oldest Walser settlements in the canton of Graubünden.
After long debates about the railway route, the Chur-Arosa Railway Company was founded on July 15, 1911. Construction of the approximately 26-kilometer line began on August 1, 1912, and after just two years, the railway opened on December 12, 1914. Numerous historical images document the challenging construction in difficult terrain, while impressive color photographs showcase the route from Chur to Arosa within the stunning landscape.
In the 19th century, adventurous travelers made the journey to Arosa on foot. The construction of the post road in 1890 and the reputation of the healthy mountain air transformed the former farming village into an elegant spa town. In luxurious sanatoriums, guests from all over Europe sought a cure. Soon, the idea of building a railway to Arosa emerged.

This book illustrates how the railway influenced Arosa's tourism through text and images.
