After the Second World War, the railway company in the Netherlands was essential for the reconstruction and had to be operational again quickly. Consideration was given to purchasing equipment from neutral countries such as Sweden and Switzerland.
After the liberation, it was important to find replacements for the many destroyed locomotives, and the NS turned to the SBB. As a result, 42 Swiss locomotives of various series served in the Netherlands for several years.
This publication discusses in detail the backgrounds of the purchase, the preparations and the transfers to the Netherlands, and the use of the ex-SBB express train locomotives at the NS. First, a report is given on the service performance of the locomotives in Switzerland and the technology of the machines. Large-format images, largely previously unpublished photos, tell their own story. A few personal stories bring both the spirit of the times and the machines described to life.
