Stoomtractie van de wederopbouw - Buitenlandse locs bij NS 1945-1958
Shortly after the Second World War, the Dutch Railways (NS) aimed for large-scale modernization. Steam locomotives had no future in post-war Netherlands, but damaged or lost rolling stock meant NS could not abandon steam traction in the early years.
Building hundreds of new steam locomotives would have been too expensive, as NS expected to use them only briefly. Therefore, the purchase of second-hand locomotives was also considered.
Between 1945 and 1946, NS introduced several locomotive series acquired from the British War Department and Swiss railways. In addition, leftover German steam locomotives were used in the Netherlands, and fifty new locomotives were built in Sweden.
Some series were in service for only a few years, others until the end of steam traction in 1958. All contributed to rebuilding the Dutch railways and the country's post-war economy.
This book presents the history of these locomotive series in words and images. Eelco Storm collected many previously unpublished photographs for "Stoomtractie van de wederopbouw".
