The 01.10 series, introduced in 1939, only briefly enjoyed its glory as streamlined locomotives before the war and post-war period accelerated its decline. After being de-energized and modernized by the Bundesbahn, they proved their performance with up to 28 000 km of mileage per month.
The 01.10 series remains unique in its history and continues to fascinate today as the most powerful German series express steam locomotive. In fully occupied trains or among railway enthusiasts, it is considered impressive.
The locomotives reached several high points, including the highest monthly and annual mileage in German and European steam locomotive operations, as well as the fastest steam-hauled scheduled trains in Europe. In 1975, they ended the DB's steam express train operations, accompanied by damage, repair costs and a dramatic maintenance history.
Author Jürgen-Ulrich Ebel devoted 15 years to this work, which presents the technical and operational history of the 01.10 almost completely. Hundreds of images, including 140 in color, accompany the text.
Volume 1 focuses on the origins, technology, modifications and the role of the 01.10 in express train transport. Mileage, performance, operational structures and consumption are examined in detail, and the question of its uniqueness among steam locomotives is answered.
