Since 1988, the steam locomotive has been no longer used to pull scheduled trains on Germany's standard gauge tracks. But steam technology has still not lost any of its fascination. Those were the days when the elegant 01s found their last refuge in Upper Franconia, coal and steel trains were transported through the Ruhr region by steam, and the sound of the three-cylinder 44s roared through the valleys in the Weserbergland every day.
But in 1977, the German Bundesbahn (DB) irrevocably stopped using steam locomotives on a regular basis. With the conclusion of this final chapter of a glorious history, an era came to an end in the former Federal Republic of Germany.

Wittes Neubaulokomotiven - Die letzten Dampfloks der Deutschen Bundesbahn und ihre Schöpfer 1949 bis 1977

When the German Bundesbahn was founded in 1949, the end of steam traction was already foreseeable. Nevertheless, the DB acquired five steam locomotive series by 1959. These machines were the work of Friedrich Witte (1900-1977) from the Bundesbahn Central Office in Minden, who had held the office of "design officer" for steam locomotives at the old Reichsbahn since 1942.
He kept this job at the Bundesbahn until 1965 and is therefore considered the "father of new locomotives".

This richly illustrated review of the life and work of the railwayman who developed the "Witte smoke deflectors" and made the "Super Pacifics" of the 01.10 series operational for the German Bundesbahn, is a fitting tribute to Friedrich Witte's life's work.
