Overzee en toch dichtbij - De veerdienst naar Vlieland
The ferry service to Vlieland has always relied heavily on the service to Terschelling, which is also operated by Rederij Doeksen. In 1861, the ferry service to both islands acquired official status when a skipper signed a contract with the Postal Service for the transport of letters between Terschelling and Vlieland. This marked the creation of the first mail boat.
In 1883, the steamboat 'Terschelling' replaced the original botter ship, while the paddle steamer 'Minister Kraus' took over the ferry service to Vlieland in 1907.
To improve the connection, Vlieland received its first small motorboat of its own in 1908, the 'Vlieland.' In 1938, the first full-fledged ferry for Vlieland, the 'Vlieland, ' was built, followed by others with names such as 'Oost-Vlieland.'
This book, illustrated with historical photographs, offers an overview of the often-discussed ferry service along one of the most challenging sea routes in the Netherlands.
