JCB 3C Mk III Backhoe Loader Manual (1977 onwards) - An insight into the design, engineering, maintenance and operation

The JCB Backhoe Loader is the iconic 'yellow digger', variants of which have now been in production for over 60 years. This manual focuses on the classic 3C Mk III Backhoe Loader, which first appeared in 1977 - revered by enthusiasts, and the machine that took JCB from leading British manufacturer to a global player.

The yellow 'JCB' has become a generic term for plant machinery, and in particular the Backhoe Loader - distinguished by its shovel/bucket at the front and rear backhoe attachment.

This manual tell the story of the Backhoe Loader - the bedrock of the JCB business - and provides fascinating insight into how the the 3C Mk III was built, developed and used, in addition to looking at how an example is maintained and operated today.
The book is produced with the full cooperation of JCB, to coincide with the company's 70th anniversary, and makes use of the extensive JCB archive, featuring a wealth of photographs and behind-the-scenes detail.

JCB Scrapbook - Celebrating 75 years of engineering innovation

In October 1945, Joseph Cyril Bamford founded a company that would transform the construction and agricultural machinery industries. JCB developed the world's first backhoe loader - a machine that remains central to its operations and innovation.

Though the backhoe loader became its signature product, JCB soon expanded into a wide range of machines. Over the past 75 years, the company has grown into a global leader, producing more than 300 types of equipment across four continents. Despite this growth, JCB has maintained its original values as a family-led business focused on reliability. It is now headed by Lord Anthony Bamford.

This illustrated book celebrates JCB's engineering achievements and the machines that have become familiar around the world. It traces the company's progress from its first trailer, built in 1945 using scrap metal, to the most recent electric mini excavators. The story is told through a rich collection of images from JCB's own archives.
