Classic Dutch-Built Coasters
Traditionally coasters had been owned by families with ships passing from one generation to the next along with the knowledge to operate and trade them successfully. The new generation were men who had left deepsea trades and then bought a coaster or they were former crewmen who wanted to have their own vessel. As the 1960s progressed, competition increased in the coastal trades and the ships increased in size in order to carry more cargo.
This is the first publication in a new Classic..... series. All the ships featured in this colour album were built in the Netherlands, although not all sailed under the Dutch flag. The heyday of the Dutch coaster was the early 1960s when over 1000 were in service.
As long as postcards have been issued, ports and ships have been attractive subjects to send as greetings. Not least by the sailor himself who wanted to let his family or loved one know where he was. Preferably with a card showing the mooring of his ship. That is why you can find a cross on many old maps: here we lie.
A colourful collection of postcards from all over the world creates a wonderful picture of Dutch coastal shipping in the previous century. A Dutch coastal ship plays a role in almost every image. Harbours that have almost been forgotten are brought into the spotlight. The peace of moored ships and the hustle and bustle of loading and unloading alternate.
Hundreds of unique postcards make "Coasters on Cards" a book that you have to experience...
