AM General Humvee - Le Hummer militaire
In the 30 years since its introduction, the Humvee has become one of the world's most recognizable military vehicles. This versatile and capable vehicle has served the U.S. Army in operations in Afghanistan, Africa, the Middle East, and the former Yugoslavia and is now in service with more than 60 countries.
Development of what was officially called the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HUMWV) began in 1979 when 61 manufacturers were sent a project brief outlining the vehicle's specifications. AM General, one of only three companies that submitted proposals, was awarded a production contract in March 1983.
The first production model of what was called the Humvee rolled off the production line in January 1985, marking the first of a line that would grow to include 16 variants. A powerful V8 engine and innovative transmissions gave it extraordinary off-road capability combined with the ability to reach very high speeds on firm ground.
In 2011, the U.S. government announced that the Humvee would be replaced by an all-new Universal Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). Humvee production, at least for the U.S. Army, eventually exceeded 280 000 vehicles.
This book describes the Humvee in detail, tells the story of its development, places the vehicle in its historical and military context, and highlights its key features. For potential owners, it addresses the issues of acquiring, restoring, and operating the Humvee, and addresses the thorny issue of price.
