Hondekoppen - Vergeeld maar niet vergeten
The Dutch Yellow "Hondekoppen" (Dog Heads): for years they were a familiar sight, especially in the InterCity services. Due to its sturdy appearance, reliability and solid driving characteristics, the Hondekop was loved by both connoisseurs and regular travellers.
And then suddenly we are in the nineties, NS no longer needs the Hondekoppen and they are being put aside en masse. 1993 and 1995 in particular were bad years for the Hondekoppen. The last sets were taken out of service in mid-January 1996, the demolition stretched until the autumn of 1997.
Frank Oude Elferink has made a selection of the most beautiful and interesting shots of Hondekoppen from his collection of railway photos for this book. The blue Benelux Hondekoppen, the last of which had to leave the field in 1988, were not forgotten.
We see the Hondekoppen at various locations in the country, sometimes together with other equipment and at the farewell, so that a good picture is given of a fascinating period on the Dutch railways. Hondekoppen, perhaps the most impressive series of train sets that NS has ever known.
Enjoy this striking type of equipment again, which has now been out of service for more than 20 years.
