Trains - Berlin: Books - Rail Routes and Stations (1/2)
Illustrated books on the trains, rail routes and stations in the German city of Berlin (1/2).
Berlin Hauptbahnhof
Just in time for the start of the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany, the extensive renovation and new construction of the railway network in the centre of Berlin was completed. The major project of Berlin's main station was thus completed: the formerly tranquil Lehrter Stadtbahnhof became the capital's central transfer station - one of the world's most impressive railway structures of the last few decades.
This title deals with the progress and setbacks of this project up to the current storm damage of the winter of 2007 and thus shows background information that is both interesting and explosive.
Berlin and the railway are closely linked. The large long-distance train stations, the city railway line, the ring railway and the numerous suburban lines once formed the iron skeleton of the metropolis.
To this day, train stations and extensive railway tracks shape the character of the German capital. This book tells the story. More than 500 impressive images bring a piece of Berlin's history back to life and show the typical locomotives, the legendary trains and the cityscapes to the left and right of the tracks. The new edition of this classic takes into account the current changes and projects of the last few years.
Die Berliner Ringbahn - Die Geschichte der legendären Eisenbahnstrecke 1871 bis heute
The eventful history of a railway line around the German capital. For 41 years, the ring line was interrupted by the inner-German border between Berlin and the GDR. Sven Heinemann's standard work goes deep into the history of the line and describes not only its current state, but also how it came to be. The vehicles used are also presented. The reader learns interesting details about the line.

Vom Rostkreuz zum Ostkreuz - Berlins großer Eisenbahnknoten
The Ostkreuz station developed into one of the capital's most important railway hubs over the course of 175 years. After 1989, the "Rust Cross" achieved cult status due to its morbid charm. The reconstruction took twelve years, but its fascination remained. Today, 1,512 long-distance, regional and suburban trains pass through the station every day, as well as around 123,000 people getting on, off and changing trains, giving the station a top position in Germany.
Bernd Kuhlmann describes with great precision the complex conversion to a modern traffic junction, which took place while traffic was still running - a challenge for passengers and construction workers.

Vom Rostkreuz zum Ostkreuz - Berlins großer Eisenbahnknoten
After reunification, an important rail junction was built in the north of Berlin with the stations Gesundbrunnen, Bornholmer Straße and Schönhauser Allee, the importance of which is easily underestimated compared to the Südkreuz and Ostkreuz. The construction project planned as Nordkreuz was the largest new construction project by Berlin's railways since 1990 after the new north-south long-distance railway tunnel.
With over 350 illustrations, this volume documents a fascinating chapter in Berlin's transport and city history. Bernd Kuhlmann traces the construction and growth of the Berlin Nordkreuz, but also looks into the past.
