Steam Locomotives - Germany: Books - History and Types (2/2)
Books on the history of German stream locomotives, including locs of the Preußische Staatsbahn and the Sächsische Staatseisenbahnen (2/2).
Urgrossvaters Dampfross - Als es in Deutschland noch dampfte
In this nostalgic volume, neither the history of technology nor valuable historical images are neglected. In order to give the reader an understanding of the changes and different variants of drive technology in steam locomotives, Jan Reiners first explains the four basic types, which are then shown using various examples from different eras.
The author explains the historical images of the locomotives in a competent manner and supplements the locomotives presented with technical explanations. The historical image material includes outstanding, rare photographs from the period from 1900 to 1939.

Der Aderlass: Die Waffenstillstands-Lokomotiven von 1918 und ihr Verbleib
In the First World War, the railway played a key strategic role as a means of mass transport. It is therefore no wonder that it was also given considerable importance in the armistice negotiations between the Entente and Germany. The armistice signed in Compiègne on 11 November 1918 had far-reaching consequences for the German railways.
The victorious powers, led by France, were less concerned with compensating for their own losses in railway equipment than with deliberately weakening the enemy's transport system in order to prevent a resurgence of fighting. It was an unprecedented bloodletting, initially limited to just 31 days, which presented the German state railways with almost insurmountable problems with the transfer of 5, 000 standard gauge steam locomotives and 150, 000 wagons. But the recipients were also quickly overwhelmed.
In years of research, Jean Buchmann and Jean-Marc Dupuy have collected a wealth of material on both sides of the Rhine, including many rare photographic documents, which bring the sequence of events to life in words and pictures. They describe the use of the armistice locomotives in France in particular (but not only) in a way that is as vivid as it is technically sound, and trace their subsequent whereabouts using the sources. The "second life" of not a few machines from the time of the regional railways was to last another 50 years or more - and is documented in this standard work for the first time in such detail.
