Steam Locomotives - GDR: Books - History and Types (1/2)
Books on the history, models and technology of steam locomotives of the East German Reichsbahn (DR) from the years 1945-1990 (1/2).
East German Steam in the 1970s
During the 1970s steam locomotives still played a big part in the operation of train services on the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the German Democratic Republic. On the main lines steam still worked a lot of important passenger services, including the express trains between Berlin and Dresden, as well as a lot of freight traffic. Steam was also responsible for most of the trains on the surviving narrow gauge lines - some of which can still be seen in action today.
Despite being behind the Iron Curtain, East Germany was probably the easiest of those countries to take train photographs without being arrested - particularly if you went on a tour organised by one of the British enthusiast clubs. These images were captured on trips such as these and, while not being welcomed with open arms, visitors were at least allowed quite a lot of freedom.
Featuring many of the different locomotives and trains that could be seen in East Germany in the 1970s, George Woods presents a fascinating and illuminating selection of photographs sure to interest any steam enthusiast.

Dampflokomotiven der Deutschen Reichsbahn 1965-1990
On October 29, 1988, an era came to an end in Germany: the freight steam locomotive 50 3559 pulled the last scheduled steam train on standard gauge tracks, thus ending a 153-year era. The fact that this historic train took its last breath under the aegis of the Deutsche Reichsbahn is of course no coincidence. Rather, the German steam engines experienced their last great heyday in the GDR.
In this book by Wolfgang Fiegenbaum and Burkhard Wollny, the irretrievably lost steam train atmosphere is brought back to life.

Dampflokomotiven der Deutschen Reichsbahn 1965-1990
1989 was the year of change for the GDR - the golden age of scheduled steam travel began for fans of steam operations. For many, this also brought with it a new experience: unlimited photography in the GDR in all places where you wanted to take out your camera or set up your tripod.
30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Edward H. Broekhuizen recalls these times that made the impossible possible. During the numerous scheduled steam train events on his photo safari through the former GDR and the new federal states, he took irreplaceable color photographs, the most beautiful of which are presented in this illustrated book.
Mit Volldampf durch Sachsen - Eine Dampfreise durch Sachsen im letzten Jahrzehnt der DDR
In the 1980s, Saxony was one of the last steam locomotive refuges of the German Reichsbahn of the GDR. Oliver Bräuer experienced this time and captured it in pictures. On his excursions, he not only took photos in the classic 35mm format, but also in high-quality medium format photography. He photographed in both color and black and white.
The author has compiled an illustrated book from his extensive archive that allows us to relive the end of the steam era in Saxony. Together with the readers, he takes an authentic journey through Saxony at that time.

Mit Volldampf durch Sachsen - Eine Dampfreise durch Sachsen im letzten Jahrzehnt der DDR
Moderne Dampfloks nach 1945 - Neubau, Reko, Umbau, Generalreparatur
After the Second World War, Germany experienced a brief renaissance in the field of steam locomotive construction. Until the early 1960s, both the German Bundesbahn and the German Reichsbahn of the GDR invested in the new development or expensive upgrading of steam locomotives to the most modern standards. Even some West German private railways acquired steam locomotives at this time.
This volume presents a comprehensive presentation of modern German steam locomotive technology after 1945. In a compact overview, the reader learns which vehicles were procured, modernized or reconstructed almost simultaneously in East and West.
