Eisenbahn-Baukompanien - an der Westfront im Ersten Weltkrieg

In his book "Die Wiederherstellung der Eisenbahnen auf dem westlichen Kriegsschauplatz" (The Restoration of Railways in the Western Theater of War), Wilhelm Kretzschmann dealt extensively with the work of the railway construction companies in World War I.
These specialized pioneer units were used, among other things, to restore the railway lines.

Gabriel Habermann, freelance journalist and photo reporter, is now building on the original volume by Mr. Kretzschmann, which was published in 1922 and is now extremely rare.
The texts have been supplemented by images from the author's extensive archive. An interesting new work on the First World War!

Kulturgeschichte der Deutschen Reichsbahn

Hardly any other era in German railway history enjoys such a legendary reputation as the Reichsbahn era. It was founded in 1920 as a joint railway administration of the German state railways. In 1924 this administration became the "Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft" before being placed "under the sovereignty of the Reich" again by Hitler in 1937.

Even the end of the Third Reich could not harm it, because the Reichsbahn survived forty years of the GDR and was even able to experience reunification.
In this book, first published in 1994, the times of the Reichsbahn are brought back to life in over 250 illustrations.

Reichsbahn hinter der Ostfront

Walter Hollnagel's qualities as a (railway) photographer require no further explanation. His most impressive photographs were taken during the Second World War as a photo reporter for the Reich Ministry of Transport.
In 1943, he made three trips to the Eastern Front, to the Ukraine and to the Crimea in the Black Sea. There, with his Leica, he documented the work of the blue and field-gray uniformed railway workers and captured unique scenes of the country and its people.

The documentary value of the images presented in this EK illustrated book is of outstanding importance almost seven decades after the end of the Second World War. Only a few photographers were able to capture the German Reichsbahn behind the Eastern Front in such atmospheric scenes.

Trümmerbahnen

After the Second World War ended in Europe on May 8, 1945, most of Germany's major cities lay in ruins. To clear away the huge piles of rubble, small and large field railway networks were built in many German cities, which became known as "Trümmerbahnen" (rubble railways).

In his book, Klaus Scherff describes the tasks, organization, technology and operation of these narrow-gauge reconstruction aids. He pays particular attention to the rubble railways in Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt/M., Hamburg, Hanover, Karlsruhe, Leipzig, Lübeck, Mannheim, Munich, Pforzheim and Stuttgart.
