The diesel locomotives of the 218 series represent the technical high point of the extremely successful V 160 family of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. Even after a good four decades of use, the 218 is still indispensable at DB AG today, even though its ranks have thinned considerably in recent years.

Although the use of the 218 at DB Regio is declining sharply, numerous machines have found new tasks in other areas, including as ICE towing locomotives at DB Fernverkehr, in the Sylt shuttle service of DB AutoZug, in the nationwide construction train service and much more.
The use of the 218 is therefore extremely varied today. A number of these machines have now found a new home with private railways or are even being preserved as museum locomotives.

Specificaties

Rundnasen und Kartoffelkäfer - Die NoHAB-Europalokomotiven

De diesellocomotieven met de bijnamen "Rundnase", "Dicknase" of "Kartoffelkäfer" hebben een cultstatus bereikt. Vanaf 1954 werden 159 locomotieven van dit type onder een EMD-licentie gebouwd bij NoHAB in Trollhättan (Zweden) voor Noorwegen, Denemarken en Hongarije. Daarnaast produceerde AFB 40 locomotieven voor België en vier voor Luxemburg. Het ontwerp is gebaseerd op de Amerikaanse F-serie en B-klasse, maar aangepast aan Europese eisen.

De laatste reguliere inzet eindigde in 2000/2001 in Hongarije, Noorwegen en Denemarken. In België waren ze enkele jaren eerder uit dienst, in Luxemburg in 1994. Toch zijn veel van deze robuuste locomotieven nog steeds in gebruik bij particuliere spoorwegen, vooral in Denemarken, Zweden en Duitsland.

Het eerste deel van het geïllustreerde boek blikt terug op de laatste jaren bij de staatsspoorwegen. Het tweede deel richt zich op de nog steeds actieve locomotieven, met de nadruk op Duitsland.
