French Traction

Frankrijk is, gezien zijn omvang, de thuisbasis van een enorm aantal locomotieven. Het land kan in principe in tweeën worden gedeeld, waarbij de noordelijke helft op wisselstroom rijdt en de zuidelijke helft op gelijkstroom. Een groot aantal locomotieven is uitgerust met beide aandrijvingen en kan daardoor door het hele land rijden.

Locomotieven worden weliswaar ingezet voor passagiersvervoer, maar worden voornamelijk gebruikt voor goederenvervoer. De belangrijkste vervoerder, SNCF, verzorgt het grootste deel, zo niet alle, diensten binnen Frankrijk. Het aantal passagiersdiensten met locomotieven neemt af, maar zowel diesel- als elektrische locomotieven zijn nog steeds te vinden.
Het grootste deel van het passagiersvervoer wordt verzorgd door diesellocomotieven van de Klasse 67 of Klasse 72, terwijl het passagiersvervoer op elektriciteit wordt uitgevoerd door locomotieven van de Klasse 17, 22, 25, 26 of Klasse 27. In de regio Parijs rijden nog veel diesellocomotieven, waardoor de Klasse 17 een bedreigde soort is.

Wat het goederenvervoer betreft, zijn er veel verschillende soorten tractie in gebruik, van de Class 7200 in het zuiden tot een groot aantal elektrische locomotieven van de Class 26, 27 en 37, die overal in het land te vinden zijn. Er rijden ook diverse soorten diesellocomotieven op niet-geëlektrificeerde lijnen, waaronder de Class 60, 63, 66, 69 en 75.
