Tot het rode licht gedoofd is - Overwegen in Nederland toen en nu
When the first railway lines were built in the Netherlands, there was already a large network of paved and unpaved roads, which were important for the local and inter-local transport of people and goods and over which stagecoaches, drawn by two or three horses, maintained services between the larger towns in the country. It was inevitable that the constructed railway lines would cross such a road here and there, thus entailing great dangers. The motto was: wait until the red light has gone out. And in fact that is still the case today, despite the safety requirements for which increasingly higher demands were made over the years.
This book shows a large number of railway crossings in beautiful photographs, from the end of the 19th century to the present. From busy level crossings in the big city, fascinating meeting places of train and road traffic and therefore unique images of the times, to remote level crossings in the countryside, where time seems to have stood still. But how long will that last?
"Tot het rode licht gedoofd is" (Until the red light is extinguished) is a visual history of a disappearing phenomenon: the railway crossing.

Tot het rode licht gedoofd is - Overwegen in Nederland toen en nu
Atlas van de verdwenen spoorlijnen in Nederland (5e geactualiseerde druk)
In the 1930s, the Dutch Railways were forced to close and dismantle hundreds of kilometres of passenger railways or downgrade them to a marginal freight railway. The cold restructuring of the 1960s and 1970s often put a definitive end to the latter category. Among other things, this piece of history about the railways in the Netherlands is described in the "Atlas of the disappeared railways in the Netherlands".
A railway line never disappears completely. Due to the extensive infrastructure, there are always remnants. Two experts have systematically investigated dozens of defunct railway lines in the Netherlands and visualized the remains. They have also tracked down archive material and images from the past, which gives history even more relief. A concise history of the rise and fall of these railway lines completes this book.
