Die Baureihe 01 - Der Star unter den Schnellzug-Dampflokomotiven der DRG (Band 1)

Zero-one - these two digits immediately conjure up an image of the famous express steam locomotive with its characteristic large smoke deflectors, mighty boiler and 2-meter-high driving wheels!
The fascination of the steam locomotive is inseparably linked to the imposing 01, which races along the tracks in front of a long express train with circling drive rods and a powerful rising plume of steam! Who hasn't dreamed of experiencing the magic of the old railway from the driver's cab of an 01 in front of a long-distance express train?

Almost 100 years ago, the first standard express train locomotive of the German Reichsbahn Company was built, fulfilling three criteria: increased performance, standardization and maximum economic efficiency. Two drive concepts were implemented: the four-cylinder compound 02 and the two-cylinder 01.
The simpler 01 prevailed, built between 1925 and 1938 with 231 machines.

Frank Lüdecke continues the project of Dipl.-Ing. Horst Troche and presents in Volume 1 the history of its creation, test results, conversions at the DB and museum locomotives. A detailed panorama of this remarkable locomotive and a worthy monument.

Die Baureihe 01.10 (Band 1) - Lokomotivlegende zwischen Stromlinienära und Computerzeitalter

The 01.10 series, introduced in 1939, only briefly enjoyed its glory as streamlined locomotives before the war and post-war period accelerated its decline. After being de-energized and modernized by the Bundesbahn, they proved their performance with up to 28 000 km of mileage per month.

The 01.10 series remains unique in its history and continues to fascinate today as the most powerful German series express steam locomotive. In fully occupied trains or among railway enthusiasts, it is considered impressive.
The locomotives reached several high points, including the highest monthly and annual mileage in German and European steam locomotive operations, as well as the fastest steam-hauled scheduled trains in Europe. In 1975, they ended the DB's steam express train operations, accompanied by damage, repair costs and a dramatic maintenance history.

Author Jürgen-Ulrich Ebel devoted 15 years to this work, which presents the technical and operational history of the 01.10 almost completely. Hundreds of images, including 140 in color, accompany the text.
Volume 1 focuses on the origins, technology, modifications and the role of the 01.10 in express train transport. Mileage, performance, operational structures and consumption are examined in detail, and the question of its uniqueness among steam locomotives is answered.

Die Baureihe 18.1 - Die schöne Württembergerin und ihre Vorgänger

The Württemberg Class C, a German Länderbahn Pacific from 1909, was considered the lightest in its category. Its elegant appearance with a smooth, steel-blue shimmering panel made of glossy sheet metal made it known as the "beautiful Württemberger".
This richly illustrated publication is devoted in detail to the special features of this extraordinary express train locomotive.

With driving wheel sets of 1, 800 mm diameter and easy curve running, it was specially designed for use in the Württemberg hills with tight track curves. Thanks to its lightweight drive and reinforced brakes, the C locomotive reached a top speed of 120 km/h.
By 1921, the Esslingen machine factory had built a total of 41 locomotives, which were in use for 46 years, even in difficult times. After the First World War, some machines were sent to France and Poland as armistice contributions.

The book concludes with a review of the development of the passenger and express train locomotives of the Royal Württemberg State Railways since 1845 and offers an important chapter in German railway history with around 340 pictures and drawings.

Die Baureihe 23 - Die letzte Neubau-Dampflokomotive der DB

The 23 series occupies a special position among the new steam locomotives of the German Bundesbahn in many ways: With 105 units, the 23 is by far the most built DB new steam locomotive and remained in scheduled service the longest, from 1950 to 1975. With the delivery of 23 105 as the last DB steam locomotive, this series also marks the end point of development.

Although designed as a pure passenger train locomotive, the 23 was able to prove itself as a "makeshift express train locomotive" at several railway depots by the end of the 1950s and advanced into performance ranges that had previously been reserved for the large-wheeled 01 and 03.
Even today, 73 years after its appearance, five locomotives of the 23 series are still in operation at various heritage railway associations - proof of the solidity of the series.

In this EK Baureihe-series book, Frank Lüdecke creates a multifaceted panorama of this remarkable and popular DB steam locomotive. The history of its creation spans a fascinating arc from the technology, the test runs, the operational machine service, the numerous design changes and the life cycles to the use in the railway depots and today's museum locomotives.
Over 600 carefully selected, mostly unpublished illustrations on 344 pages illustrate the use of this special creation of German steam locomotive construction.

Lokporträt Baureihe 38.2-3 - Der sächsische Rollwagen

After the turn of the century, the procurement of a powerful, triple-coupled passenger train tender locomotive became increasingly urgent for the main routes in the dense Saxon railway network.
The "Sächsische Maschinenfabrik vormals Richard Hartmann AG Chemnitz" was commissioned to build the new type XII H2, and between 1910 and 1927 it built a total of 169 locomotives in several construction lots.

After the war losses in the First World War and the surrender of armistice locomotives to Belgium and France, the German Reichsbahn classified its 134 locomotives as 38 201 to 38 334.
Thanks to their reliability and performance, they were soon given the name "Rollwagen" and were mainly used in heavy passenger train service, but were also used on express and fast trains.

A large proportion of the locomotives remained with the eastern railway administrations after 1945 and, minus the war-damaged machines, the remaining 60 or so locomotives were used in numerous railway depots after the Second World War.
At the end of 1969, their use ended due to the change in traction.

This volume shows the life of the successful Saxon locomotive type in all eras in impressive photographs and is also dedicated to the only surviving museum locomotive, 38 205.

Mit der 03 unterwegs - Zwischen Nordsee und Alpen

Although it has been out of service with the DB for almost 40 years, the Class 03 is still one of the most famous steam locomotive series. As the lighter sister of the famous Class 01, it dominated express and fast train service until the mid-1960s, especially north of the Main line.

This volume presents impressive images from an era in which the 03 series was a common sight in front of express trains. Its elegant shapes and the impressive play of its two-meter-wide wheels fascinated young and old alike.
