Lockheed A-12 - The CIA's Blackbird and Other Variants (Osprey)

Durante los primeros años de la Guerra Fría, la forma más eficaz de obtener inteligencia estratégica sobre la Unión Soviética y sus aliados era mediante sobrevuelos tripulados. El U-2 de Lockheed tuvo un éxito rotundo en esta función. Sin embargo, para gran preocupación del presidente estadounidense Eisenhower, su forma permitía que los radares rusos lo rastrearan.
Dada la extrema sensibilidad de estos vuelos, el Presidente insistió en que se hicieran todos los esfuerzos posibles para reducir a cero la sección transversal de radar (RCS) del U-2, logrando así que la aeronave fuera invisible. Al comprobarse que esto era imposible, se preparó el terreno para un reemplazo del U-2. Tras una competencia entre Lockheed y Convair, la primera fue declarada ganadora y el resultado fue el A-12.
Diseñado para incorporar características de "furtividad" incluso antes de que se acuñara el término, el A-12 ha demostrado hasta la fecha ser el avión a reacción más rápido y que vuela a mayor altitud jamás construido.
