Tractor - Een geschiedenis

De landbouwer en zijn tractor. Ze vormen een onafscheidelijke twee-eenheid. Van 1904 tot aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog laat de agrarische sector zich langzaamaan verleiden door de kracht van gemotoriseerde pk's. Na 1945 is de doorbraak totaal. Het trekpaard kijkt toe in de weide.

Wie zijn de belangrijkste tractorproducenten? Wat waren en zijn de voor- en nadelen van het gebruik van de tractor? Welke technische vernieuwingen maakten de machine zo populair? Waarom hebben tractoren vaak een gele, groene of rode kleur? Is rijden met de tractor voorbehouden aan de man, of laten vrouwen ook hun rechten gelden? Hoeveel kost een tractor en wanneer is hij aan vervanging toe? Waarom heeft elk kind zijn speelgoedtractor?

Passie voor tractoren. Dat is de drijfkracht voor verzamelaars van miniaturen of van echte oldtimers. De leden van de trekkersclubs snijden kaarsrechte voren in het veld.
Nieuwe tradities zoals de kerstmisoptochten met tractoren die versierd zijn met duizenden lampjes, én oude gewoonten zoals de tractorwijdingen, zijn evenzovele uitingen van diezelfde liefde voor de tractor.

Yves Segers, Femke Paulussen en Bert Woestenborghs zijn verbonden aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven en het Centrum Agrarische Geschiedenis (CAG). Ze verzamelden een ploeg enthousiaste auteurs rond zich die allemaal één ding gemeen hebben: een passie voor landbouwgeschiedenis.

Compact Tractors: An Illustrated Guide and History

Compact Utility Tractors, or CUTs, are cute little cutters! As farming became more refined so did the needs of tractors. The answer was a smaller, more maneuverable and fuel-efficient tractor with a variety of implements and attachments. With this focus on special needs, attachments became available such as plows, disc harrows, mower decks, cultivators, spreaders, snowblowers, and more.
They have become a necessary utility for farmers, orchards, small construction jobs, and landscaping/maintenance for estates, parks and golf courses.

At the forefront of this evolution were the Farmall Cub and John Deere Model L. Then came the Japanese invasion; a new kind of tractor by companies such as Yanmar and Kubota. These four-wheel-drive machines were rugged and tough and used a variety of hydraulically powered attachments.
American companies such as John Deere, International Harvester, and Massey-Ferguson built their own four-wheel versions. Today's compact tractors, such as the Kubota's BX series, Massey-Ferguson's GC series, and the John Deere 3000, offer an even larger selection of implements for special purposes.

Since Hart-Parr first coined the term tractor in 1906, agricultural machinery has experienced enormous development. The boom began in the 1920s, when legendary companies such as Hanomag and Lanz followed the pioneer Fordson, who in 1917 shaped an entire generation of tractors like no other with his groundbreaking Fordson-F.

After the huge sales figures in the 1950s, the tractor market slowly became saturated at the beginning of the 1960s. Many of the smaller manufacturers had to give up or were bought up. Traditional brands such as Allgaier, Deutz, Eicher, Man, Hatz, Hanomag, Porsche, Güldner and Fahr are still known to many fans today, even though tractor production in these factories was discontinued long ago. Today, high-performance models such as those from Fendt or John Deere dominate the registration statistics.

Large tractors always have a special appeal. In his book "Ultimate Tractor Power", renowned author Peter D. Simpson offers a detailed insight into the current market and historical development.
He covers articulated and large tractors both as wheeled tractors and in various crawler configurations.

The book contains a wealth of information on manufacturers and models, organized according to chassis design. Everything is represented, from powerful Upton tractors with 350 hp and rear-wheel drive to eight-wheel tractors from DTU and Track Marshall crawler tractors.
