DDR-Volksmarine - Seehydrografischer Dienst und Grenzbrigade Küste 1949-1990 (Typenkompass)

The Grenzbrigade Küste (coastal border brigade) was part of the GDR Volksmarine and at the same time belonged to the border troops of the East German state. It was responsible for securing the maritime border with the Baltic Sea.
The GDR's Seehydrografische Dienst (SHD, maritime hydrographic service) was also part of the Volksmarine. Its tasks included surveying and marking fairways, providing maritime weather services and testing nautical equipment. The SHD carried out its duties with survey ships, buoy layers and navigational aid boats.

Knut Schäfer presents all the ships of these two subgroups of the Volksmarine in this Typenkompass. Each type is presented with a photo, a historical description and a technical data sheet.
