High-angle guns were developed to hit targets that were not directly in the field of view. To achieve this and to be able to shoot over obstacles, they had to be fired at a steep angle.
Among the most famous and heaviest high-angle guns in Germany were the "Big Bertha" and the "Karl" mortar. They were used primarily against enemy fortresses as "concrete crackers".
