Les Chapelon du dépôt de Calais

Chapelon... A name that shines on the roll of honour of steam locomotives. These machines, the most famous in France, are the result of the transformation of Pacific-type locomotives that belonged to the Paris-Orléans company (P.O.).
For the Compagnie du chemin de fer du Nord and the Calais depot, they were the undisputed stars of the glorious era of steam, from the immediate post-war period to the end of the 1960s.

The Chapelons or the quintessence of steam thanks to their performance: speed, resistance, reliability, coal savings, aesthetics, prestige... The flagship of the Calais depot (now defunct), a true national pride, these powerful locomotives pulled the famous luxury train La Flèche d'Or, made up of Pullman cars.
At the depot, each machine in this prestigious series was assigned to a single team: the mechanic and the driver, designated as permanent employees. This book is also a tribute to these "lords of the rail" who served them valiantly and for whom being a permanent employee at the P.O." was the culmination of a rolling career...

Vapeur sur la Région Nord

This book presents a selection of 295 photographs, among the most characteristic of the railway landscape of the Northern Region of the SNCF in the fifties. It comes from the hundreds of original "North" negatives, taken by Jacques-Henri Renaud from 1947 to 1962. The quality of the shots in this collection, which until then remained confidential, is exceptional, as is its diversity.

The authors of these lines had the opportunity to acquire it, with the desire to make it known and shared, by providing the images, published for a large number in large format, with precise and varied captions combining technique and atmosphere.

Jean Bazot - Les années vapeurs

Volume XVIII of the famous "Images de Trains" collection is dedicated to the color photographs of Jean Bazot, known for his impressive collection of old postcards made available for many railway publications.
Jean Bazot's photographic collection has remained very little exploited until today. Didier Leroy, known for his many works on railway history, has brought together the most beautiful color images, mainly covering the period from 1956 to 1970.

Highlighted by using large and medium format extensively, they are supported by a caption providing subtle information, which can only invite additional curiosity about these "steam years", on the equipment, buildings, and environment, before the contingencies of time came to erase them.

Les 140 - Les consolidations françaises

Les 'Mikado' Etat

This book traces the life and career of the 250 Mikado État locomotives, starting from the P.O. 5801/2 prototypes. After an in-depth technical study, abundantly illustrated with photos, drawings, curves, etc. concerning not only the series, but also the transformed machines, the author describes the career at the SNCF of each machine from 1938 to its decommissioning: depots, maintenance workshops, mileage, etc.

Les Mikado du PLM

In 1914, the PLM put into service "Mikado" locomotives to provide 1300-tonne freight trains as well as courier convoys at a speed of 90 km/h...
A second batch, built in the USA because of the war, was delivered between 1917 and 1919. Finally, from 1921 to 1932, 680 other locomotives were built and distributed in the company's large depots.
Modified and modernized, they earned their letters of nobility by becoming the 141 E and F at the SNCF, while inspiring the 141 P series. The last ones would not disappear until 1969.

Chapelon

El nombre de André Chapelon será conocido por todos aquellos interesados en el desarrollo de la locomotora de vapor. En pocas palabras, fue un genio, muy superior a todos los demás en el campo del diseño de locomotoras de vapor.
Esto no pretende menospreciar las habilidades y capacidades de hombres como Churchward, Stanier, Gresley y Bulleid. De hecho, este último reconoció la influencia de Chapelon en su trabajo.

En su Francia natal, Chapelon transformó las locomotoras de vapor de varios ferrocarriles franceses, convirtiendo máquinas a menudo mediocres en vehículos de alto rendimiento que superaban las capacidades de máquinas similares utilizadas en otros países europeos en aquella época. Fue responsable tanto de reconstrucciones como de nuevos diseños.
Su trabajo se vio interrumpido por la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero su importancia se reafirmó en 1946 con su magnífica locomotora 4-8-4 n.º 242 A 1, capaz de producir una potencia continua de 5.500 CV, un logro extraordinario.
