Les automitrailleuses Ford M8 & M20 de l'U.S. Army
Specially designed as a reconnaissance vehicle, the Ford Light Armored Car M8 was primarily intended for mechanized cavalry units.
With 8 523 units built, it would cover all needs in this area. Only one variant would be produced based on its mechanics: the Armored Utility Car M20 without a cannon, of which 3 791 units would come off the production lines.
Launched in 1941, the project for the new combat vehicle would not come to fruition until March 1943, when the first vehicles were received by the army.
An officer of the Ordnance Department, Lieutenant J.R. Murray, is responsible for being the link between the various components of the army and the manufacturers. Throughout the process of creation and realization, he will gather with his notes, reports and letters concerning this very particular project.
These approximately 1500 pages of archives have allowed the author to faithfully trace the process of creation of these machines, from the first draft to the end of production in June 1945.
