The Battleship Bismarck (Anatomy of the Ship)

Sinking the Beast : The RAF 1944 Lancaster Raids Against Tirpitz

In de herfst van 1944 brachten drie RAF-aanvallen - uitgevoerd met zware Avro Lancaster-bommenwerpers - het Duitse slagschip Tirpitz uiteindelijk tot zinken. Vele eerdere pogingen, waaronder het gebruik van minionderzeeërs en aanvallen door vliegtuigen vanaf vliegdekschepen, hadden de Tirpitz beschadigd in haar Noorse schuilplaats. Gedurende de hele oorlog was de Tirpitz uitgegroeid tot een gevreesd wapen van de oorlogsmachine van het Derde Rijk, en had ze bijna een mythische status verworven.

Halverwege 1944 kreeg No. 5 Group van het RAF Bomber Command de opdracht om de Tirpitz definitief tot zinken te brengen. Tijdens de eerste aanval, met de codenaam Operatie Paravane, werd de Tirpitz beschadigd door Lancasters die vanuit Rusland opereerden. Het grote schip liep zware schade op.
Vervolgens werd het slagschip verder naar het zuidwesten, naar Tromsø, overgebracht voor reparaties, waardoor het binnen het bereik van Britse bommenwerpers kwam.

De laatste aanval was succesvol. Elke Lancaster was uitgerust met een 'Tallboy'-bom van 5444 kg (12.000 lbs), gevuld met hoogexplosief materiaal. De Tallboy, ontworpen door Barnes Wallis, die ook verantwoordelijk was voor de stuiterbom van de Dambusters, bleek zeer effectief.
Ondanks zwaar luchtafweergeschut en lichtspoorvuur werd de Tirpitz getroffen door explosies van apocalyptische proporties: ramen sneuvelden en huizen werden zo'n vijf kilometer verderop van hun fundering gerukt. Een verdwaalde Tallboy-bom raakte het eiland en schakelde alle AAA-batterijen uit.
De klus was geklaard: een aantal bijna-treffers en een voltreffer verpulverden het machtige slagschip. De Tirpitz kapseizde en zonk, daarbij haar gedoemde bemanning met zich meesleurde.

"Bismarck" - A Minute-by-minute Account of the Final Hours of Germany's Greatest Battleship

Het tot zinken brengen van het Duitse slagschip Bismarck - een meesterwerk van techniek, goed gepantserd en met een hoofdartillerie van acht 15-inch kanonnen - was één van de meest dramatische gebeurtenissen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
