Dunkirk Little Ships

In May 1940, following the rapid advance of German troops through Holland, Belgium and France, the British Expeditionary Force and French army retreated to Dunkirk. Operation Dynamo was instigated in an attempt to rescue as many of them as possible. With the harbour at Dunkirk severely damaged, much of the evacuation would have to take place from the beaches; only small, shallow-draught boats could do this.
After appealing to boatyards, yacht clubs and yachtsmen throughout the south east of England, the Admiralty managed to round up around 700 small craft which, along with 200 military vessels, were able to rescue an astonishing 338,226 troops over nine days.

In 1965, forty-three vessels which had taken part in the evacuation commemorated the twenty-fifth anniversary by crossing from Ramsgate to Dunkirk, and the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships was formed soon afterwards. A further fifty years on, over 120 Little Ships are still in commission and it is thought that hundreds of others may still survive.

A Shipyard at War - Unseen Photographs from John Brown's, Clydebank 1914 - 1918

Hoewel de scheepswerf van John Brown & Sons in Clydebank vooral bekend stond om grote passagiersschepen en oorlogsschepen, bouwde ze tussen 1914 en de voltooiing van de oorlogsprogramma's in 1920 een breed scala aan schepen - van grote oorlogsschepen tot torpedobootjagers en onderzeeërs, ongebruikelijke ontwerpen zoals een watervliegtuigdrager en een onderzeebootdepotschip, en zelfs een reeks koopvaardijschepen van oorlogsstandaard.

Zoals de meeste scheepswerven uit die tijd, huurde Clydebank professionele fotografen in om het hele bouwproces vast te leggen. Ze gebruikten grootplaatcamera's die foto's produceerden met een verbluffende helderheid en detailrijkdom. Maar in tegenstelling tot de meeste scheepswerffotografie is de collectie van Clydebank bewaard gebleven, hoewel relatief weinig van de beelden ooit zijn gepubliceerd.

During the Second World War navies developed low visibility camouflage for their ships, on both the vertical and horizontal surfaces, in order reduce visibility by blending in with the sea, or confuse the identity of a ship by applying more obtrusive patters.

The Ships of Scapa Flow

The islands surrounding Scapa Flow made one of Britain's best natural harbours, while the location at the north of Scotland protected the approaches to the North Sea and Atlantic.

J. Samuel White & Co., Shipbuilders

J. Samuel White & Company was het oudste bedrijf op de Admiraliteitslijst en bouwde alleen al 252 schepen voor de Royal Navy. De sluiting van de werf in 1966 betekende het einde van 300 jaar scheepsbouw, waarin het bedrijf zowel bij handels- als marineklanten erkenning had gekregen.

De marine stond aanvankelijk bekend om haar snelle douaneschepen en brigantijnen, maar in haar laatste jaren verwierf ze grote faam met haar torpedobootjagers voor de Royal Navy. Ze was zeer innovatief en ontwikkelde en patenteerde vele baanbrekende producten. Andere innovaties waren onder meer semi-dieselmotoren, warmtewisselaars, airconditioners en compressoren, naast een reeks scheepsschroeven.

Het bedrijf bouwde niet alleen schepen en boten, maar ook een reeks watervliegtuigen. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog produceerde White 100 schepen, waaronder 27 torpedobootjagers, en 201 watervliegtuigen. De productie tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog kwam uit op 317 schepen, waaronder 26 torpedobootjagers en een grote mijnenlegger.

Dit boek, geïllustreerd met foto's van deze en vele andere producten van het bedrijf, vertelt het verhaal van J. Samuel White en zijn dochterondernemingen, een bedrijf dat is gebouwd op een reputatie van kwaliteit, wat het de slogan opleverde: "White's-built - well-built!".
