Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog stonden alle legers voor de uitdaging om vijandelijke pantservoertuigen te bestrijden. Het Duitse leger gebruikte aanvankelijk het 3.7 cm antitankkanon, maar in 1942 werd duidelijk dat gesleepte wapens onvoldoende vuurkracht hadden. Krachtigere wapens werden in 1942 en 1943 geïntroduceerd.
Aan het Oostfront deden overbelaste Panzerjäger-eenheden steeds vaker een beroep op StuG-uitgeruste artillerie voor ondersteuning. Eind 1943 werden StuG-voertuigen toegewezen aan nieuwe tankvernietigerseenheden en werd een speciale Jagdpanzer ontwikkeld op basis van het PzKpfw IV-onderstel.
Deze geïllustreerde studie van de Duitse pantserexpert Thomas Anderson maakt gebruik van archiefmateriaal en gevechtsrapporten om de ontwikkeling van de Jagdpanzer en zijn varianten te beschrijven. Ook behandelt het boek de organisatie en inzet van deze eenheden op het slagveld.

The subject has been written about before and many photos published, but this book combines 20 years of original research and gathering of materials to take a look at the vehicle, using 117 rare large format photographs over 112 pages.

These pictures are supplemented by specially commissioned high quality artwork by Felipe Rodna. The author and artist have worked closely together and incorporated the latest findings to offer the reader the most authentic colour plates of the Jagdpanzer 38 yet published.
