Cross-Country Lorries : German Manufacturers (Camera On)

During Weimar Germany's first programme for motorising the Reichswehr from 1926, development of three-axled cross-country lorries with a payload of 3 tons was demanded (in addition to vehicles of other specification).
Three companies were involved in the development of these lorries: Bussing, Henschel and Krupp. The first Henschel model - the Henschel type 33 B 1 - was delivered in 1928.

Krupp Protze Lorry

The L 2 H 43 and L 2 H 143, better known by the nickname given to it by the troops that used it "Krupp-Protze", was a specialized multi-purpose designed six-wheeled 6x4 German light off road truck and artillery tractor produced between 1934 and 1941. It was fitted with the Krupp M-304 flat four engine, a 4-cylinder horizontally opposed petrol engine that originally delivered 55bhp but was upgraded to deliver 60bhp in 1936.

The Krupp Protze saw extensive service on all of the operational fronts where the German army was engaged.

The 'Einheits-Diesel' - WW2 German Trucks (Camera On)

This photo-album in the "Camera On" series contains over 100 photographs of the Leichter Geländegängiger Lastkraftwagen "Einheitsdiesel" (Standard Diesel Lorry).
The development of the standard lorry for the German military started in 1934.

It was planned to develop vehicles with 2, 3 and 4 axles with payloads of 1.5, 2.5 and 4 tons, but in the end only the model with three axles and 2.5 tons payload entered serial production.
Series production started in 1937 and ended in 1940 with more than 14,300 vehicles being built by nine different main vehicle producers. The "Einheits-Diesel" lorries were made identical by all nine manufacturers: Bussing-NAG, Daimler-Benz, FAUN, VOMAG, Henschel, Krupp, Magirus, MAN and Borgward.

"Camera On" is a series of books on the equipment and operations of the German Wehrmacht in WW2. The focus is on the often ignored or overlooked soft-skinned, non-armoured, vehicles used by the German army. Deutsche Militärlastwagen - Bis 1945

The Wehrmacht entered the Second World War with a huge number of horses, wagons, tanks and trucks. However, as there were never enough to replace the lost vehicles or even to increase the level of motorization, trucks were considered the army's weak point. The bulk of Wehrmacht transport of World War 2 was in the 3-ton payload range. The best known truck in this class, aside from the Opel Blitz S, was the Henschel Typ 33. Mercedes PKW und LKW 1935-1945

Aanvankelijk moest de Reichswehr het doen met commercieel verkrijgbare auto's, omdat de bouw van militaire voertuigen door de overwinnende mogendheden na de verloren Eerste Wereldoorlog werd verboden. Dit leidde tot de introductie van zogenaamde terreinwagens gebaseerd op bestaande modellen, de "Kübelwagen".
Pas na 1933 begon men met de productie van militaire auto's, zoals de Mercedes-Benz 170 V, die in grote aantallen met een jeepcarrosserie aan de troepen werd geleverd. Daarna volgden de drieassige terreinhoogwerkers zoals de G 1.

Vrachtwagens werden bijzonder belangrijk omdat de Eerste Wereldoorlog het belang van gemotoriseerd bevoorradingstransport had aangetoond. In de eerste jaren vertrouwde het Wapenbureau op commercieel verkrijgbare typen met weinig extra's.
De fusie van Daimler en Benz in 1926 legde de basis voor een geheel nieuw programma bedrijfsvoertuigen, waaronder de nieuw geïntroduceerde dieselmotor, destijds 'ruwe olie motor' genoemd. In 1928 begon de serieproductie van de drieassige vrachtwagen G 3, die in grote aantallen werd uitgerust met een opbouw voor de verbindingstroepen.
Na 1933 maakte de vrachtwagenbouw een snelle opleving door, waarbij Daimler-Benz marktleider werd. Tegenwoordig worden er ook speciale militaire terreinwagens ontwikkeld.

Deutsche Heeresfahrzeuge - Anhänger und Sonderanhänger bis 1945 (Typenkompass)

Standardized trailers were first used by German forces during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. However, it was not until the First World War that they were able to demonstrate their great usefulness in the context of subsidized trucks.
The areas of use were varied: they often completed the structures of various camps and individual units as mobile facilities. Workshop trailers, lighting trailers and kitchen trailers were just as indispensable as a medical trailer.
