Midway-Class Aircraft Carriers 1945-92 (Osprey)

La classe Midway fut la plus grande série de porte-avions américains construits pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Mise en service en septembre 1945, elle devint l'élément central de la flotte au début de la guerre froide.

Grâce à leur taille et leur conception, ces navires furent modernisés pendant plusieurs décennies. Ils participèrent à la guerre du Viêt Nam, et la "Midway- lança en 1990 les premières frappes aéronavales de la guerre du Golfe.

L'historien naval Mark Stille explique que les Midway étaient conçus comme des successeurs plus grands et mieux protégés que la classe Essex. Ils furent les premiers à recevoir un pont d'envol blindé, puis des améliorations majeures comme les ponts obliques, catapultes et systèmes CIWS.

Illustré de photos d'archives et d'œuvres originales, l'ouvrage retrace l'évolution de ces bâtiments jusqu'à la conservation de la "Midway- comme musée à San Diego, seul porte-avions américain non issu de la classe Essex à être préservé.

The US Navy has given Haynes author Chris McNab and photographer Patrick Bunce official clearance to spend time at sea on one of its 'Nimitz' or 'Gerald R. Ford' class super carriers.

During the visit Chris conducted interviews with key personnel of all major departments, including flight-deck crew, aviators, ordnance officers, engineers, logisticians, operations crew and the captain; while Patrick photographed life above and below decks, with a special focus on the engineering side of carrier aviation often not covered in other publications.

The nuclear-powered supercarrier USS Nimitz is the oldest carrier in the US fleet. Commissioned in 1975, CVN-68 is named after famed navy admiral Chester Nimitz and has been at the front line of many naval operations in its 40-plus years of service. Nimitzs design and development, construction, sea trials, commissioning, and first cruise are presented in concise, detailed text.
Also covered are all of the ship's systems, including electronics, defensive/offensive armament, command and control, and aircraft launching and recovery.

US Cold War Aircraft Carriers - Forrestal, Kitty Hawk and Enterprise Classes (Osprey)

La classe Forrestal (Forrestal, Saratoga, Ranger et Independence) fut la première classe achevée de super-porte-avions de l'US Navy, ainsi nommée en raison de son augmentation de taille de 25 % par rapport aux porte-avions de l'époque de la Seconde Guerre mondiale tels que la classe Midway, et de la force de ses groupes aériens (80 à 100 avions, contre 65 à 75 pour le Midway et moins de 50 pour la classe Essex).
Du point de vue de la conception, les Forrestals représentaient une énorme amélioration par rapport à leurs prédécesseurs, étant plus stables et plus confortables, tout en conservant des avancées telles que les ponts d'envol blindés introduits avec le Midway.
