Northrop Flying Wings (Osprey)

Un demi-siècle avant l'entrée en service du bombardier furtif B-2 "aile volante", John K. "Jack" Northrop développait déjà des prototypes d'un grand bombardier stratégique "aile volante", qui auraient été les bombardiers les plus révolutionnaires de leur époque.

La Seconde Guerre mondiale a engendré un besoin en bombardiers à très longue portée et Northrop a obtenu un contrat pour un bombardier d'une envergure de 172 pieds, le B-35.
Plusieurs exemplaires furent construits, évoluant progressivement vers la configuration définitive du XB-35. Les essais révélèrent que l'appareil était indétectable par radar, mais les ingénieurs peinèrent à surmonter les difficultés de conception et plusieurs pilotes périrent dans des accidents.
Bien que le programme ait été annulé dans les années 1950, le concept s'est étendu à d'autres domaines très innovants, tels que les prototypes de chasseurs XP-56 et MX-324 Rocket Wing.

Mais le plus grand héritage fut la première aile volante opérationnelle - le bombardier furtif Northrop Grumman B-2, qui a largement mis à profit l'expérience durement acquise lors des programmes pionniers d'un demi-siècle auparavant.

Northrop YB-49 Flying Wing (Pilot's Flight Operation Instructions)

Visionary designer Jack Northrop built a series of experimental "flying wing" aircraft both before and during WWII. One of the most radical designs of the post-war era, the propeller-driven YB-35 bomber's all-wing design minimized drag and promised maximum payload capacity and terrific endurance.

The YB-49, a turbojet powered variant built on the YB-35 airframe, forever altered aviation history and inspired the design of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. Originally printed by Northrop Aircraft in 1948, the YB-49 Flying Wing Pilot's Flight Operating Manual taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit.

The manual was declassified and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted, and color images appear as black and white.

A Pictorial History of the B-2A Spirit Stealth Bomber

This is a pictorial history of Jack Northrop's dream, the B-2A Spirit, a low-observable, strategic, long-range, heavy bomber with the ability to penetrate sophisticated and dense enemy air-defense shields.
It is capable of all-altitude attack missions up to 50,000 feet, with a range of more than 6,000 nautical miles (nm) unrefueled, and over 10,000 nm with one refueling, giving it the ability to fly to any point in the world within hours.

Stealth technology has rendered radar systems ineffective by greatly reducing their detection ranges. After ten years of service, the B-2A finally achieved full operational capability in December 2003. An assessment published by the USAF showed that two B-2As armed with precision weaponry could do the job of seventy-five conventional aircraft.
