Dodge, sur les voies de la liberté

In the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, the overseas industry mobilized all its forces to devote itself solely to war production. Chrysler, one of the three major automobile manufacturers, then resolutely committed itself to numerous weapons programs: armored vehicles, munitions, artillery pieces, and aircraft engines came out of the group's factories in large numbers.

But it was especially in the range of light tactical vehicles that Chrysler, through its subsidiary Dodge and with its 750 kg 4x4 pickup truck, demonstrated all its know-how. Called Weapons Carrier, the vehicle benefited from the experience acquired since 1939 with pickup trucks that were regularly improved in terms of mechanics and performance as well as general silhouette.

The Weapons Carrier came in multiple versions - personnel transport, medical, radio, command vehicle - and was delivered widely to the US Army, but also to the Allies, British, Soviet or Free French.
Robust and reliable, Dodge vans continued to serve well after the conflict, in many Western armies as well as in the civilian sector where, after their reform, they pursued a new and long career.

Les véhicules Diamond T de l'U.S. Army

Between 1940 and 1945, the Diamond T Motor Car Company delivered just over 50 000 vehicles to the American army and the Allies. In this production, just over 30 000 were 4-ton, 6x6 heavy trucks, which would have many versions: cargo, tow truck, pontoon carrier, engineering dump truck, cartographic box, etc.

The "Diamond" would be present in all theaters of operations, where its robustness and reliability would allow it to take on all tasks without weakening. Due to its expertise in heavy machinery, Diamond T would also be used for the production of the famous Half-track, with more than 10 000 units.
All of these models are described in this book by a great specialist on the subject, using archives and hundreds of period photos.

Army

In the late 1930s, the US Army was in the midst of restructuring its units and its vehicle fleet, giving rise to two major approaches in the field of logistical support. Proponents of the trailer or semi-trailer advocated a physical separation between the mechanical part of the traditional truck and the rear technical part, dedicated to supplies or special equipment.

Another current preferred compact and inseparable units to save time and ensure optimal responsiveness on the ground. Both types of trucks were finally ordered during the Second World War, with complete trucks intended for the front and tractors and semi-trailers for the lines of communication and the staging area.

This study in French, carried out by the author, focuses on the second category, including various specialized equipment for the train, quartermaster, cavalry, engineers or aviation.

Les véhicules des transmissions de l'U.S. Army

The standardization of the American army's vehicles would take time before reaching completion in the early 1940s. At the same time, modern and powerful transmission equipment was being developed, which had to be made mobile. Among the major families of US Army vehicles, we therefore find trucks, workshop trucks, vans and trailers designed by the Signal Corps, described in technical detail and illustrated by hundreds of period photos.

U.S. Army Chevrolet Trucks in World War II : 1 ½-Ton, 4x4

Between 1940 and 1945, large numbers of trucks of all categories were delivered to the U.S. Army by the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors. Over 160,000 of these trucks were the G-506 light four-wheel drive trucks - which became the standard 1 ½-ton, 4x4 truck for both the U.S. Army and Army Air Corps during the war. In addition, many more thousands were delivered to Allied forces as part of the Lend-Lease program, including nearly 50,000 delivered to the Soviet Union.

Tough, well-built and more agile than the deuce and a half, the Chevy 1 ½-ton played a part in every theater of operations during the war. Its durability and mechanical reliability made it ideal for a wide range of missions. Not for nothing did Chevy advertise the trucks during the war as "Vehicles of victory."

More than 75 years after it was designed, the small Chevrolet truck is still a favourite with collectors. This fully illustrated book details the different series of trucks and their many uses within the U.S. Army including cargo trucks, panel delivery trucks for the Signal Corps, dump trucks for engineers, telephone trucks, tractors, bomb service trucks for the air force. It also covers their part in the Lend-Lease program, and their continued use after the war.

U.S. Army Tractor Trucks and Semitrailers

NUEVO

Amphibian Truck Company - Field Manual (FM 55-150)

Created in 1944, this field manual explains the organization and operation of the Transportation Corps amphibian truck company and its DUKWs. The mission of the amphibian truck company was to aid the supply and evacuation operations of forces in areas where harbor and port facilities were inadequate or even totally lacking.
Thanks to its unique ability to operate on land and in the ocean, the DUKW made the impossible - possible. Over 21, 000 were built during WWII, and used with distinction in landing zones in both the Pacific and European Theaters, and in the Korean War at Inchon.

Chapters in this manual include: What is the DUKW?, safety precautions, operational maintenance, land operations, winching operations, water operations, towing in water, anchoring and mooring, piloting, cargo handling, visual signaling, special uses and unusual cargo, field operations, and more.
Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

GMC DUKW - America's Amphibious Duck in World War II and Korea (Legends of Warfare)

The General Motors Corporation DUKW was without a doubt the most successful amphibious military vehicle ever constructed. This is due in large part to the enormous amount of scientific and engineering talent that was devoted to the project. Included in the design team were America's Cup winner Rod Stephens, adventurer and environmentalist Dennis Puleston, and scientist and engineer Palmer C. Putnam.
The DUKW was so successful and so widely used that Gen. Dwight Eisenhower described it as "one of the most valuable pieces of equipment produced by the United States during the war."

This book chronicles the development and use of these vehicles from concept to combat in WWII and Korea.
Through dozens of archival photos, many never before published, as well as detailed photographs of some of the finest existent examples of surviving vehicles, these iconic armored fighting vehicles are explored, and their history is explained.

GMC DUKW-353 Amphibian Truck - Technical Manual (TM 9-802)

A modification of the 2 ½-ton "deuce", the DUKW amphibious truck was designed in 1942 by a team that included a British sailor, an American yacht builder and an MIT engineer. Powered by a GMC Straight-6, 270 cubic inch engine, the DUKW's six drive wheels allowed it to move up to 50 mph on the road and at roughly 6 mph in water.
It was the first vehicle ever designed to allow tire pressure to be adjusted from inside the cab, allowing it to operate easily and efficiently on sand, rock, gravel and paved roads. The vehicle lacked armor, but one in every four produced came equipped with a machine gun ring mount. Overall, the DUKW weighed 6.5 short tons empty and could carry 2.5 short tons or twelve soldiers.
The DUKW's career in combat was unique, being used to ferry supplies and men from ship to shore, and operating in flooded environments. It was used in landings in the Pacific and European Theaters, including at D-Day, and many were also used during the Korean War at Inchon.

Incidentally, the term "DUKW" is not a military term, but rather an acronym coined by General Motors. "D" stood for the year it was designed, 1942. "U" stood for "Utility", "K" for front wheel drive, and "W" for two powered rear axles.
Over 21, 000 DUKWs were built during WWII. Some remain in use today as amphibious tour buses.

Originally created in 1945, this War Department technical manual contains a full description of the DUKW and shows how to operate and maintain it.
Originally restricted, this 500+ page manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Mack Truck 10-Ton 6 x 4 - Technical Manual (TM 9-818)

The Mack Model NR was a heavy truck constructed for military use from 1940 to 1945 by the Mack Manufacturing Corporation of New York U.S.A. The Model NR was mainly used to tow trailers carrying heavy equipment such as tanks and large bulldozers. It was also used to tow heavy field guns.
Its wide bogie axles and extra large tires were ideal for desert service, allowing them to "float" on the sand. Many Model NRs were supplied under the Lend-Lease Program to Great Britain, Australia, Russia and other Allied countries.

The Mack diesel engine in the Model NR was the result of nearly a decade of development work by the innovative company. It used the Lanova combustion chamber design. It produced 131 brake horsepower with 519 cubic inches of displacement. It offered a significant improvement in fuel economy, durability, driveability and torque.

Created in 1944, this technical manual TM 9-818 reveals a great deal about the Mack Model NR's design and capabilities. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

U.S. Army Signal Corps Vehicles 1941-45
