Il-2 Shturmovik - Red Avenger

El Il-2 fue diseñado como un avión de apoyo cercano a baja altitud, capaz de destruir blindados enemigos y otros objetivos terrestres. Lejos de ser un caza, el Il-2 fue diseñado exclusivamente para soportar una enorme cantidad de daños sin que el piloto, el artillero de cola y los componentes mecánicos críticos sufrieran daños.
Finalmente, el Il-2 se convertiría en el avión más importante para la Unión Soviética en la defensa del territorio nacional contra las hordas de tanques que avanzaban. En su apogeo, la producción del Il-2 alcanzó un máximo de 300 aviones al mes, y sus variantes contaban con un potente cañón de 23 mm, 200 submuniciones antitanque y 4 cohetes de 132 mm.

El Il-2 se convirtió en un adversario muy respetado y temido. Las tripulaciones aéreas soviéticas lo apodaron el "Tanque Volador" por su increíble capacidad para soportar enormes daños y aun así lanzar su carga útil, regresando a la base intacto.
Gracias a su ametralladora de 12.7 mm, sus artilleros traseros no solo derribaron a los ases de la Luftwaffe, sino que el Il-2 también se utilizó como caza, y los pilotos alemanes se asombraron al ver cómo los proyectiles de cañón de 20 mm rebotaban en sus placas de blindaje.
También se sabía que las tripulaciones soldaban blindaje adicional a sus Il-2. El Shturmovik demostró ser tan eficaz que muchas tripulaciones soviéticas recibieron la Estrella de Oro de Héroe de la Unión Soviética. Incluso hoy en día, el Il-2 es considerado el equivalente ruso del Spitfire.

Al finalizar la guerra, se habían producido unos 36.000 Il-2, que se convirtieron en el símbolo del Frente Oriental.

Ilyushin / Beriyev A-50 : The Soviet Sentry (Flight Craft)

Brought out in the late 1970s as a successor to the obsolete Tu-126 airborne early warning aircraft, the A-50 co-developed by the Il'yushin and Beriyev bureaux is one of the most interesting military variants in the field of Il-76 military transport.
