Because tensions between the Western powers and the USSR increased after 1945, it was decided to set up a new navy as part of the rearmament of the young Federal Republic.
This navy was primarily intended to block the Baltic Sea approaches and prevent Soviet forces from landing on the German coast.

In this Typenkompass, Hans Karr describes the creation and structure of the new German Navy as well as its tasks within NATO.
Supported by around 115 illustrations, he portrays all the important ship classes and submarines that were used by the Bundesmarine from 1956 to 1990.
