When Germany was still in ruins and reconstruction was in its infancy, Bellingrodt was already out and about along the tracks, at the stations and in the depots with his camera in hand, documenting a unique railway atmosphere.

Carl Bellingrodt (1897-1971) is considered the most important and best-known German railway photographer. His outstanding photographs offer a unique documentation of half a century of transport history, which has had a formative influence on many subsequent photographers. Although Bellingrodt's photos are well-known among railway enthusiasts, not all of his works are familiar to a wider audience.

This book presents for the first time a systematic overview of Bellingrodt's work in the years 1922-1943. The volume documents steam locomotives of series 01 to 45 and provides a comprehensive insight into the impressive photographic legacy of this master of railway photography.

After volumes 1 to 3 of this book series documented the Reichsbahn era up to the end of the Second World War, the fourth volume is devoted to Carl Bellingrodt's main creative period. This period extends from the first post-war photographs to well into the Bundesbahn era of the early 1970s.
The 1950s and 1960s in particular made Bellingrodt an outstanding personality who, during this time, photographically documented the early years of the Federal Republic and its railways at the highest technical level in an unrivalled manner.

This volume opens this creative period with the first post-war photographs up to the Bundesbahn era in the early 1970s. The focus in the first volume on this Bundesbahn era is on the express steam locomotives of the series 01, 01.10, 03, 03.10 and 05.

In addition, some photos from the volumes "Elektrolokomotiven" and "Bundesbahn-Dampflokomotiven" have been added. Around 250 photos from the Reichsbahn era allow a new look into the past. Attractive landscape photos form the backdrop for the documentation of the locomotive use at that time.
